Vueling Airlines History

Vueling Airlines is a Spanish budget airline based in Barcelona. The airline was founded in 2004 and is currently the second largest airline in Spain with their major hubs being in Barcelona El Prat Airport and Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport in Rome. Starting from humble beginnings with a single flight from Barcelona to Ibiza in 2004, Vueling now services over 160 destinations including Africa, Asia and all across Europe with plans to expand to the middle east. There has been a steady increase in the number of passengers flying with Vueling since it initiation, almost tripling its intake from 2008, with over 5 millions passengers, to nearing 15 million passengers in 2012. On of the most popular routes in the UK is that from Cardiff Airport to Ibiza, Majorca or Granada. Vueling’s aim is to make air travel as pleasurable and satisfying as possible, and they aim to achieve this by constantly striving for improvements, which is clearly referenced in their company slogan of “love the way you fly”. Vueling is often referred to, within the media, as one of ‘Europe's Big 6’ low cost airlines; a groups which also includes easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Norwegian and Pegasus Airlines.

Vueling Airports and Destinations

Vueling operates within 38 countries with an average of 2.2 million passengers from each respective country. Offering both domestic and international flights, Vueling’s main base and largest hub can be found at Barcelona El Prat Aiport, and their additional major hub is located at Leonardo de Vinci-Fiumicino in Rome. Vueling always select the major airport of all the cities and routes that they fly to. This not only helps to avoid long and costly transfers, but also further reinforces their company slogan of “love the way you fly”. Other popular airports include Amsterdam, Ibiza, Seville, Valencia, Paris-Orly, Brussels and Florence.

Vueling Services

Vueling is classed as a low cost airline; yet despite this, it is not the cheapest on the market. However, rather than simply undercutting the market, Vueling offer extra benefits to their customers as an incentive to travel with them. This is called the Punto program, in which points are awarded for each flight, which can then be cashed in and exchanged for flights to any of the 170 Vuelings destinations. Aside form the Punto program, Vueling airlines also offers a host of services while on board the aircraft and prior to departure. These include the ability to choose your seat- with a choice of Excellent and XL seats, checking-in specialist luggage such as musical instruments and sporting equipment, flying with your pet and insurance packages from just €2. It is recommended that you check in online prior to your journey as doing so at the airport will not only take longer, but you will be fined with the amount vary in accordance with the airport. Food and drink will be offered shortly after take off; these, however, are not complementary and can be purchased as part of an upgraded fare prior to boarding, or in flight.

Vueling Ticket Types

Vueling offers 3 different types of Fares: the Basic fare - which is available for all travellers and allows you to sign up for the Punto program, the Optima Fare - this allows you to take one case weighing up 23kg, choose the location of your seat and swap your flight for one leaving on the same day free of charge and the Excellent Fare - this includes every thing mentioned in the previous fares along with total flexibility on changes and cancellations, exclusive check in desks at certain airports, access to VIP lounges, on board catering and much more.
