What do I need to know about travelling on Renfe trains?

    Renfe offers Promo, Promo+, Flexible, Mesa (table for 4), General, and Round-trip fares. Renfe also offers Preferente (1st Class) and Turista (2nd Class) tickets for each fare type.

    No, children under 4 years old do not require a ticket on regular Renfe trains if the child sits on an adult's lap. A ticket should be purchased if a seat is needed. Children under 4 years old travelling on Renfe AVE, Long Distance and Avant trains must have a free child's ticket.


    No check-in is required for Renfe trains. However, boarding control closes 2 minutes before the train departs.


    Renfe offers discounted fares for travellers who have a Gold Card ("Tarjeta Dorada"), a Youth Card ("Carné Joven"), or a Card + Young Renfe 50 supplement ("Tarjeta + Renfe Joven 50"). The Gold Card is for travellers over 60 years old, pensioners, and people with disabilities. The Youth Card is for travellers between 14 and 25 years old, while the Card + Young Renfe 50 discount is for travellers who have a youth card and have purchased the an additional €50 supplement.


    For travelers over 60 years old. Tarjeta Dorada card number must be entered during checkout, and card must be shown on the train. Offer cannot be combined with additional discounts.

Trains from Valencia to Barcelona: Journey Details

The first train from Valencia to Barcelona departs at 6:28 a.m., with the last service departing at 8:35 p.m. Services are all direct and run around once an hour with Renfe Operadora. The weekend schedule is fairly similar, with services running as frequently and until the same time. The only difference in the weekend schedule is that the first train does not leave until 9:27 a.m.

Taking the Train from Valencia

Most trains from Valencia to Barcelona depart from Estacio del Nord, which is located just a few hundred metres from the town hall in the city centre. As it is so close to everything within the city centre, no buses run from within the centre to Estacio del Nord. However, for those with heavy luggage, taxi services are available.

Getting into Barcelona by Train

Barcelona is renowned for its beautiful architecture, with many of the buildings in the city dating back to medieval times, some even to the Roman period. Most trains from Valencia to Barcelona arrive at Barcelona Sants station, which is a few miles south-west of the city centre. Metro lines L3 and L5 serve the city centre from Barcelona Sants seven days a week from early in the morning to late at night, though bear in mind services are less frequent on Sundays. Both lines take around five minutes to reach the city centre from the station. Taxis are also available, with the average taxi journey from Barcelona Sants to the city centre being just under five minutes.
